Cleveland Browns quarterback battle heats up as Sanders, Watson and Gabriel compete for starter

Head coach Todd Monken said he believes the Cleveland Browns are headed in the right direction despite a crowded quarterback room. He highlighted the development of younger players and praised the progress of veteran Deshaun Watson, who is returning from a torn Achilles after missing the 2025 season.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, entering his second year, announced he has simplified his off‑field life to improve on‑field consistency. Sanders posted a 56.6% completion rate, 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and ten interceptions in eight games last season, including a 364‑yard, three‑touchdown performance against the Titans. Both Sanders and Watson, along with rookie Dillon Gabriel, will vie for the Week 1 starter during training camp.

Monken emphasized that the staff’s job is to develop each quarterback and find the best solution for the team’s future.
