Cleveland Browns QB competition shifts toward Deshaun Watson

The Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition has seen a significant shift during training camp. Despite head coach Todd Monken previously indicating that rookie Shedeur Sanders would receive the majority of first-team repetitions on Saturday, veteran Deshaun Watson took all the first-team reps with the starting offense instead.

Sanders and 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel split the second-team duties. This departure from the established rotation suggests the coaching staff may be leaning toward Watson, who is seeking to rebuild his career after missing the entire 2025 season due to Achilles injuries. Watson's performance in camp has been mixed, including several interceptions, but he has also shown flashes of strength during recent drills.

In addition to the quarterback battle, the team is managing internal dynamics, including a recent on-field argument between Watson and running back Quinshon Judkins during an 11-on-11 drill. Monken used the incident as a "teaching moment" regarding communication. A decision regarding the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears is expected by Monday.
