Cleveland Clinic performs first robotic mastectomy in Ohio

Cleveland Clinic has become the first hospital in Ohio to perform a robotic mastectomy with nipple preservation, following recent FDA authorization. A surgical team led by Dr. Stephanie Valente successfully completed the procedure, which included immediate breast reconstruction, at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.

This minimally invasive approach utilizes the da Vinci SP surgical system, employing a 3D camera and robotic instruments through a small incision of approximately one inch. The technique allows surgeons to remove breast tissue while preserving the nipple, areola, and skin. According to Dr. Valente, this method offers greater precision, smaller scars, and faster recovery compared to traditional procedures, while improving aesthetic outcomes and maintaining a more natural appearance.
