Gene-editing treatment reduces cholesterol by 50% for over one year

Scientists have reported that a single-dose gene-editing treatment using CRISPR-Cas9 can significantly and durably reduce cholesterol levels. Results from a small pilot study of 15 patients, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, indicate that the intervention may offer a long-term solution for managing high cholesterol.

In the group receiving the highest dose, patients experienced an approximately 50% reduction in LDL (bad) cholesterol and a substantial decrease in triglycerides. Follow-up data showed that these reductions, which were evident 60 days after the infusion, persisted for more than one year without significant adverse effects.

Researchers from the United States, Australia, and New Zealand emphasize that while these preliminary results are promising, larger clinical trials are necessary to confirm the safety and efficacy of the treatment before it becomes a standard medical option.
