Cleveland Fed President warns of aggressive rate hikes if inflation expectations rise
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack warned that a deterioration in public inflation expectations could necessitate more aggressive interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve to restore price stability.
Speaking at a Goldman Sachs event in New York, Hammack expressed concern that if an “inflationary mindset” becomes embedded in the public, monetary policy could become less effective. She noted that in such a scenario, the Fed “might need to move even more” than originally planned.
Hammack also observed that current financial conditions appear roughly neutral and are providing little meaningful restraint on economic activity. She pointed to continued strong investment in sectors such as technology despite higher borrowing costs.
These remarks follow recent US inflation reports that exceeded expectations, increasing market speculation regarding potential rate hikes during the October 27–28 FOMC meeting. The Federal Reserve previously raised its target rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%–4.00% in September.
