San Diego Padres sale to José E. Feliciano approved for $3.9 billion
Major League Baseball owners have unanimously approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to an investment group led by José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones. The transaction is valued at a record $3.9 billion, making it the most expensive baseball team sale in MLB history.
Feliciano, a Puerto Rican businessman and co-owner of Chelsea FC, will serve as the club’s control person. The couple will hold more than 40 percent of the franchise, with other investors participating in the remaining ownership. The sale marks the end of the Seidler family’s tenure, following the passing of owner Peter Seidler.
While the approval is official, the transaction remains contingent upon the formal closing, which is expected in the coming weeks. During the transition, the Padres will continue daily operations under CEO Erik Greupner and President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller. A press conference to introduce the new owners is scheduled to take place at Petco Park on August 24.
