Cleveland Orchestra musicians begin strike over contract dispute

Unionized members of the Cleveland Orchestra began a strike at midnight on September 25 following the expiration of their collective bargaining agreement. The labor action has resulted in the cancellation of scheduled performances, including works by Brahms, Liszt, and Martinů.

The dispute centers on compensation and contract terms. Musicians are seeking a total salary increase of 25 percent over three years to keep pace with inflation. Negotiating committee chair Elayna Duitman noted that base salaries have fallen approximately $15,000 behind inflationary rates, citing the need to remain competitive with peer orchestras in cities such as New York, Chicago, and Boston.

Management, represented by the Musical Arts Association, has stated that the union's salary demands are “simply not sustainable for the institution.” While negotiations since July have seen some progress on issues such as parental leave, workload, and hiring practices, a final agreement on pay remains elusive.
