CLIA report shows sustainability progress in global cruise industry

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has released its annual Environmental Technologies and Practices (ETP) report, documenting measurable progress in the adoption of sustainable technologies across the global cruise industry. The report, which covers more than 90% of the world’s cruise passenger capacity, highlights an increasing shift away from heavy fuel oil (HFO) toward more sustainable options.

Key advancements noted in the report include expanded use of biofuels, enhanced shore power capabilities, improved wastewater treatment systems, and increased onboard potable water production. The industry is also focusing on fuel flexibility, energy efficiency, and advanced engine technologies capable of utilizing multiple fuel types.

Bud Darr, President and CEO of CLIA, stated that cruise companies are continuously investing in technologies and operational capabilities to make the global fleet more efficient and future-ready. He emphasized that realizing the full potential of these investments will require collaboration between fuel producers, governments, ports, and energy providers to ensure the large-scale availability of safe, competitive, and renewable low-emission fuels.
