Cliff Burton's former bandmates recall musical talent

Former bandmates and industry figures have shared recollections of the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, highlighting his prodigious musical talent and complex playing style.

Mike Overton, guitarist for Burton’s first professional band, Trauma, described the Castro Valley native as an inseparable stage partner. Overton noted that Burton’s background in classical music and music theory from Chabot College initially caused friction, as his advanced technique was difficult for others to follow.

Brian Slagel, founder of Metal Blade Records, recalled witnessing Burton perform with Trauma in Los Angeles, noting that Burton’s virtuoso style and stage presence were immediately apparent. Burton’s unique approach to the bass eventually led to him joining Metallica shortly after his time with Trauma.
