Climate activists and scientists demand end to fossil fuel era
Activists and scientists are intensifying calls for radical action to address the escalating ecological and climate crises. On September 15, a global climate strike is scheduled to demand an end to the financing and use of fossil fuels. This movement, led by Fridays for Future, seeks to pressure political leaders to transition away from fossil fuels to mitigate worsening climate disasters.
In a separate but related development, over 1,000 scientists across various disciplines have issued an appeal in the newspaper Le Monde, calling for civil disobedience. The scientists argue that decades of government inaction regarding the climate emergency and the sixth mass extinction cannot be tolerated. They urge a radical transformation of economic and production models, noting that current commitments under the Paris Agreement may lead to a temperature increase of at least 3°C by 2100.
