Climate Central report: 1.5 billion people affected by extreme heat

An analysis by Climate Central reveals that over 1.5 billion people experienced at least one month of dangerous heat between June and August due to climate change. The report indicates that nearly nine out of ten Europeans faced a month of hazardous temperatures during this period, while Asia saw the highest total number of people affected, including 117 million in India alone.

Scientists attribute the increased frequency and intensity of these heatwaves primarily to the burning of fossil fuels. The study notes that 54 countries, including France, Italy, and the United Kingdom, experienced their warmest June-to-August period since 1970. Seven of the ten hottest countries were located in Europe.

These extreme weather conditions have led to record wildfires, widespread droughts, and increased pressure on health and emergency services. Kristina Dahl, Vice President of Science at Climate Central, described the findings as an “alarming global pattern” that demonstrates human-caused global warming is pushing communities beyond safe physical limits.
