Climate change accelerates as air pollution disrupts global weather patterns
Recent climate research indicates that air pollution is fundamentally altering global weather patterns. Aerosols—tiny particles of soot, dust, and chemicals from industry and vehicles—act as nuclei for cloud formation. Instead of producing gentle rain, high concentrations of these particles create clouds with an excessive number of tiny droplets that are too light to fall, leading to extreme storms when they finally reach a critical mass or causing droughts in arid regions by preventing precipitation.
Simultaneously, Europe is warming at approximately twice the global average rate. While the global temperature increase is around 1.4 degrees Celsius, Europe’s average temperature has risen by about 2.5 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial era. Scientists attribute this accelerated warming to four primary factors: shifting weather patterns, proximity to the Arctic, reduced snow cover, and decreasing air pollution.
Changes in atmospheric circulation have led to more frequent and intense heatwaves in Europe, such as the heat domes observed in recent years. Experts from the Copernicus climate service note that statistically significant changes in atmospheric pressure and circulation patterns have been recorded over the last several decades.
