Climate change and weather shifts impact Indonesia's food security
Climate change and shifting weather patterns are significantly impacting food security and public health in Indonesia. Data from BMKG indicates that 2024 was the hottest year recorded in Indonesia, with average temperatures reaching 27.5°C, approximately 0.8°C higher than the 1991-2020 normal period.
These temperature changes and unpredictable rainfall patterns threaten the agricultural sector by affecting planting seasons, water availability, and crop productivity, which increases the risk of harvest failure. Such disruptions can lead to food price inflation, disproportionately affecting low-income populations and reducing access to nutritious food. UNICEF Indonesia has noted that extreme weather increases the risk of malnutrition, particularly among children.
In East Java, BMKG Juanda predicts the peak of the dry season will occur between August and September 2026. Authorities have advised residents to conserve water, prepare reserves, and remain vigilant regarding the increased risk of forest and land fires caused by dry conditions. Public health warnings have also been issued to limit outdoor activities during peak heat to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
