Climate change disrupts migratory bird patterns
Climate change is significantly altering the timing of migratory bird patterns. According to Péter Lovászi, head of the monitoring and research department at the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME), many long-distance migratory species are seeing population declines due to a lack of suitable resting habitats.
Changes in food availability are a primary driver of these shifts. For example, the drying of shallow lakes affects shorebirds, while the earlier ripening of berries can prompt small songbirds to migrate sooner. Conversely, insect populations are appearing earlier in the spring, which can cause insectivorous birds that rely on genetically programmed migration timing to miss peak food abundance, negatively impacting chick survival.
Storks in Hungary are also experiencing shifts. Large groups are now often observed between August 6 and 10, with very few remaining by August 20. Additionally, many Eastern European storks have begun congregating in larger groups at landfills rather than traditional wetlands, making their departure from villages appear more sudden and abrupt.
