Climate change drives adaptation in Albanian agriculture and Swiss tourism

Climate change is driving significant economic and operational shifts in both agriculture and tourism. In Albania, farmers in the Korçë and Dibër regions are adopting technological innovations to combat unpredictable weather, such as decreasing rainfall and extreme temperatures. Supported by the German Government through GIZ, farmers are utilizing agrometeorological stations and digital platforms to monitor local weather, assess frost risks, and manage irrigation and fertilization more efficiently.

In Switzerland, a federal study warns of severe economic consequences due to rising temperatures. The report estimates that the winter tourism sector could face annual losses exceeding two billion Swiss francs by 2060. Lower-altitude ski resorts, particularly those between 1,500 and 1,800 meters, face potential closures due to insufficient snowfall. While investment in adaptation may mitigate some damage, officials note that the interconnected nature of climate risks, such as heatwaves and droughts, could lead to even higher total costs than currently projected.
