Climate change exposes 560 million children to dangerous annual heat stress
A study published in the journal Science Advances reveals that human-induced climate change is exposing approximately 560 million children worldwide to at least one additional month of dangerous heat stress every year. Research led by Vrije Universiteit Brussel, with contributions from the University of Eastern Finland, indicates that about 43 percent of children aged 9 and under now experience at least 30 additional days of heat stress annually.
The study specifically highlights the dangers of humid heat, which prevents the body from cooling itself effectively through sweat. Children are physiologically more vulnerable than adults because their body temperatures rise more quickly and their temperature regulation systems are less efficient. Risks include severe dehydration, heatstroke, and potential long-term impacts on cognitive development and learning processes.
The impact is disproportionately high in tropical regions and developing nations with younger populations, particularly in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa. Professor Annalisa Savaresi of the University of Eastern Finland noted that the consequences for future generations will worsen without intervention.
