Climate change impacts drive sea level rise and shifts in green finance

Global climate challenges are manifesting through rising sea levels, shifting financial landscapes, and evolving disinformation tactics. A report commissioned by the UN Secretary-General indicates that sea level rise is essentially irreversible on a human timescale due to greenhouse gas emissions. Global sea levels rose by approximately 5.9 mm in 2024, the highest annual increase since satellite measurements began. This trend poses significant risks to coastal regions, including the Polish coast near Gdańsk and Żuław.

In the financial sector, the landscape for 2026 shows a prioritization of carbon footprint reduction and ESG analysis. Green bonds have become a foundational tool for financing climate projects, such as renewable energy and sustainable transport, with new EU regulations working to minimize greenwashing risks.

Simultaneously, climate disinformation is shifting its strategy. Rather than denying climate change itself, new narratives focus on undermining the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of climate actions. A report by T-Mobile and UNEP/GRID-Warszawa highlights how these digital narratives influence social attitudes and can delay necessary environmental protections.
