Climate change impacts glaciers in Aosta Valley and agriculture in Abruzzo

Climate change is causing significant environmental shifts in Italy, affecting both Alpine glaciers and regional agriculture. In the Aosta Valley, the Miage glacier has dropped an additional 15 meters since 2020, a height comparable to a five-story building. Meanwhile, the Planpincieux glacier remains highly unstable, with movement speeds reaching up to two meters per day during summer, necessitating road closures to mitigate risks to local settlements.

In the Abruzzo region, the Center for Documentation on Environmental Conflicts (CDCA) has launched the ‘Storie di campo’ project. This twelve-month initiative aims to collect data on how rising temperatures, water scarcity, and extreme weather events are impacting local agriculture. The project seeks to build a comprehensive overview of climate effects to support the development of a regional adaptation plan through interviews with experts, institutions, and farmers.
