Europe faces rising ocean temperatures and extreme summer heat
Rising ocean temperatures and extreme heatwaves are significantly altering marine ecosystems and energy production across Europe. In the North Sea, water temperatures have increased by approximately four degrees Celsius over the last century. This warming has caused a shift in the food chain, where traditional catches like cod are declining due to reproductive failures, while cephalopods such as squid and octopus are experiencing population explosions. In the Mediterranean Sea, research from the Ruđer Bošković Institute indicates that warming is accelerating and penetrating hundreds to thousands of meters below the surface, rather than remaining a surface-level phenomenon. This warming, combined with increasing salinity, affects water density and circulation.
On land, Europe experienced extreme summer heat, with seven of the ten countries globally showing the highest temperature deviations. The average European summer temperature was 1.17 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average. While these heatwaves strained traditional energy sources like nuclear power due to low river levels, solar energy production proved resilient, increasing by up to 17 percent during heatwaves in regions like France and Hungary.
