Climate change impacts mental health and water security

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a driver of psychological distress and resource scarcity. In Zimbabwe, extreme weather events such as Cyclone Idai in 2019 and the 2023/2024 El Niño-induced drought have caused significant trauma, anxiety, and economic hardship. The drought led to a maize yield decline of approximately 60% compared to the five-year average, exacerbating food insecurity and mental health challenges like chronic stress and environmental grief.

Globally, experts warn of a growing freshwater crisis that threatens to stand alongside climate change as a primary human threat. Mark Rosegrant of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) noted that current water management is insufficient to sustain the growing population or end malnutrition. This scarcity directly impacts agriculture, which is the largest consumer of freshwater.

In sub-Saharan Africa, research indicates that climate change poses a specific threat to cave-dwelling bat species, such as Miniopteridae. While temperature and rainfall changes affect food availability, these species also require specific geological roosting habitats, such as caves, to survive shifting climatic conditions.
