Climate change impacts outpace urban adaptation efforts
Global temperatures continue to reach unprecedented levels, with August recorded as the warmest month globally since records began, reaching a mean temperature of 16.96 ºC. According to the Copernicus climate monitoring service, this heatwave has outpaced urban adaptation efforts, particularly in Western Europe, where summer temperatures were 2.54 ºC above the average.
The extreme heat has contributed to significant environmental stress, including record-high ocean surface temperatures and exceptionally low water levels in major European rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, and Vistula.
In response to these escalating risks, geospatial AI company AlphaGeo has released a report analyzing 72 major cities using its Climate Risk and Resilience Index (CRRI). The study distinguishes between raw physical exposure to risks—such as sea-level rise and extreme weather—and the Risk Adjusted for Resilience (RAJ) score. The RAJ score accounts for existing adaptation measures, including resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and governance policies, to determine how effectively a city can mitigate its physical vulnerabilities.
