Climate change impacts trees and bee populations in Italy
Extreme heat and prolonged drought are causing significant ecological stress to flora and fauna in Italy. Trees are experiencing premature defoliation due to temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. This process reduces photosynthetic activity and prevents trees from accumulating the necessary sugar and carbohydrate reserves for winter, making them increasingly vulnerable to pathogens, insects, and wind damage.
Simultaneously, the beekeeping industry is facing challenges as climate change alters flowering cycles. While bees possess natural cooling mechanisms, the scarcity of water and nectar is disrupting their ability to produce honey. Heatwaves have caused earlier flowering and shorter nectar availability, forcing beekeepers to conclude seasons much earlier than usual. The combination of water scarcity and shifting ecosystems poses a long-term threat to biodiversity and agricultural stability.
