Climate change impacts water levels in Hungary and crop yields in Serbia

Climate change and shifting weather patterns are significantly impacting water levels and agriculture in Central Europe. In Hungary, research from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) indicates that the country has warmed to the point where half of its territory now experiences a climate similar to central Spain. While annual precipitation levels have not decreased drastically, rising temperatures have increased evaporation rates, leading to deteriorating water availability. Recent data shows the Danube River level is rising at Nagybajcs, Gönyű, and Komárom, though levels remain critical at Paks.

Simultaneously, severe drought in Serbia is devastating crop yields. Farmers report that corn production may fail entirely this year, while sunflower yields have dropped to only 30 percent of the average. Wheat harvests are expected to be 50 percent below realistic yields. Agricultural producers in the region are also facing economic pressure due to low purchase prices for crops, prompting discussions with the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture to bridge the gap between initial offers and realistic market indicators.
