Europe faces energy security risks and 180 billion euro climate cost

Europe faces a dual threat from an energy crisis and the economic fallout of extreme climate events. Natural gas storage levels reached 59% on August 10, the lowest seasonal level since 2009. This vulnerability is exacerbated by conflicts in the Middle East, which threaten the Strait of Hormuz—a transit point for 20% of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments. High summer prices are also discouraging traders from replenishing stocks ahead of winter.

Simultaneously, extreme heatwaves and droughts are imposing massive costs on the European economy. Estimates from Triodos Bank suggest that the economic impact of this year's heatwaves could reach 180 billion euros, roughly 1% of the EU's GDP. These climate-driven costs affect labor productivity, agriculture, energy production, and transport. In France alone, heatwaves are estimated to cost between 10 and 15 billion euros. The agricultural sector is also seeing immediate impacts, with wine producers in Italy and France forced to harvest grapes much earlier due to rising temperatures and drought.
