Climate change poses unique health risks to children

Climate change is significantly impacting child health, according to research summarized in the book ‘Kindergesundheit und Klimawandel’ by Dirk Holzinger, a specialist in pediatrics at the University Hospital Essen.

Children are particularly vulnerable because they are in critical stages of development. Infants and toddlers absorb heat more easily, and because children require more water and food relative to their body weight, they may also ingest higher levels of pollutants. Key risks include heat-related dehydration, increased asthma due to longer pollen seasons, and higher infection risks from the spread of ticks and mosquitoes.

Furthermore, increased UV exposure in Europe is linked to a higher risk of skin cancer for children born today. The research also notes that environmental stressors during pregnancy, such as heat and air pollution, are associated with premature births and low birth weight. Experts emphasize that children are facing health consequences for a crisis they did not cause.
