Climate change puts 37 global cities, including Istanbul, at risk of submersion

A new study conducted by Swiftest, led by co-founder Matthew H. Nash, identifies 37 metropolises worldwide that face the risk of being submerged or becoming uninhabitable within the next 100 years due to global warming and rising sea levels.

The report ranks coastal and port cities based on their level of risk. Among the most vulnerable cities globally are Tokyo, Mumbai, and New York City. Notably, two major Turkish cities appear in the top ten: Istanbul is ranked 5th and Izmir is ranked 6th in terms of threat level.

The research highlights that while some cities are developing active coastal protection measures, many others remain insufficient in their flood prevention and sinking mitigation plans.
