Climate change shifts European fish populations and aquaculture
Rising water temperatures across European waters are significantly altering fish populations and aquaculture trends. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, aquaculture production increased to 561.9 tons in 2025, a 2.3 percent rise from the previous year. The African catfish dominates this sector, accounting for 74.5 percent of the region's production due to its rapid growth and adaptability.
In Lake Constance, the European catfish population is experiencing an explosion, with annual catches rising from under 100 kilograms in the late 1980s to over 10,000 kilograms recently. Researchers attribute this growth to climate change, as warmer waters facilitate mating and faster growth.
Similarly, the North Sea is seeing a shift in biodiversity due to a temperature increase of approximately four degrees over the last century. While traditional catches like cod are declining because they struggle to reproduce in warmer water, cephalopod populations are surging. In the Flemish fishery, squid and octopus now constitute more than one-fifth of the total catch, a dramatic change from nine years ago when they were virtually non-existent in local nets.
