Climate change threatens French cultural heritage, report warns

A report by Réseau Action Climat (RAC) warns that climate change poses a significant threat to France’s cultural and material heritage. By examining 20 different sites across the country and its overseas territories, the report highlights how increasingly frequent and violent weather events threaten monuments, collections, archaeological remains, and traditional savoir-faire.

Specific risks identified include flooding, fires, droughts, and coastal erosion. Flooding endangers the Loire Valley châteaux, such as Chambord and Azay-le-Rideau, as well as industrial remains in the Hauts-de-France mining basin. In the Lascaux cave, temperatures have risen by 1°C in just 20 years. Coastal sites like the Guérande salt marshes and the fortified city of Saint-Malo face increasing vulnerability to submersion due to receding coastlines.

Additionally, the Burgundy wine region is facing extreme weather conditions, including prolonged droughts and early frosts, which are altering the identity of the wines. In Strasbourg, the sandstone of the cathedral is at risk of accelerated degradation due to changing climatic conditions.
