Climate change threatens global coffee production and yields

Climate change is significantly impacting coffee production, threatening the stability of one of the world's most popular crops. Because coffee plants are highly sensitive to environmental shifts, even minor changes in climate can directly affect both yield and quality.

Projections suggest that the land suitable for coffee cultivation could shrink by approximately 50% by the year 2050. This shift is already manifesting in the market through record-high and fluctuating prices for both Arabica and Robusta varieties. As costs rise, there are concerns that coffee may transition from an everyday staple to a more expensive luxury product, affecting both specialty and conventional supermarket segments.

Experts emphasize the need for investment in climate adaptation to protect the livelihoods of coffee farmers. While relocating cultivation to new regions is a theoretical possibility, such moves present significant social and environmental challenges, particularly for small-scale farmers who lack the resources to relocate operations.
