Climate change threatens sea breezes in coastal cities

Meteorologist Mario Picazo has raised concerns regarding the potential decline of sea breezes in coastal cities due to climate change. These natural air currents, driven by temperature differences between land and sea, serve as a ‘natural air conditioning’ that helps mitigate high summer temperatures for millions of people.

Research indicates that rising ocean temperatures may be altering these patterns. Significant reductions in sea breeze frequency have been observed in major coastal hubs, including New York and Shanghai. The weakening of this phenomenon could increase thermal stress in these regions, making heatwaves feel more intense and longer-lasting as a primary natural cooling mechanism disappears.

In New York, specific weather forecasts indicate high temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius with high UV levels, highlighting the ongoing importance of monitoring local climate conditions in densely populated urban areas.
