Climate change threatens to erode social connections and community ties

Climate change is increasingly impacting social connections and community stability. Extreme weather events, such as intense heatwaves, storms, and wildfires, can paralyze social life by canceling cultural events and forcing individuals to remain indoors, thereby limiting physical interactions.

While social ties are vital for mental health and collective safety—facilitating information exchange and mutual aid during emergencies—climate change may weaken the very social fabric that helps communities thrive. Fiona Doughty, an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Tennessee, is researching how these environmental crises intersect with social isolation. Her research in the Appalachian region suggests that extreme weather can exacerbate the ongoing "loneliness epidemic" by disrupting daily habits, destroying communal meeting spaces, and isolating individuals.
