Climate change triggers heatwaves in Antigua and Barbuda and flood warnings in Chennai
Antigua and Barbuda has recorded 12 heatwaves in the first ten months of 2026, nearly doubling the seven heatwaves observed last year. Climatologist Orvin Paige of the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service warned that rising temperatures and persistent drought could worsen as El Niño conditions potentially extend into 2027. Paige noted that high nighttime temperatures are particularly concerning as they prevent the human body from recovering from daytime heat exposure.
In India, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has called for improved stormwater drainage and flood-prevention infrastructure in Chennai. Following recent rainfall described as having an intensity comparable to a cloudburst, Ramadoss warned that climate change and the impact of El Niño increase the risk of severe flooding. He urged the government to release the Thirupugazh Committee's disaster-management report to guide necessary infrastructure strengthening.
