Greece faces dual challenges of pandemic risks and Sitia wildfires
Gikas Magorkinis, an associate professor of hygiene and epidemiology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, warns that the climate crisis is actively reshaping the landscape of infectious diseases. He notes that rising global temperatures are altering mosquito populations and bird migration routes, which serve as reservoirs for pathogens. Magorkinis identifies influenza—potentially a recombinant strain from birds and pigs—as a high-risk candidate for the next pandemic within the next decade, while suggesting another COVID-like event is possible within 50 years. He also highlights the West Nile virus as a permanent issue in Greece.
Separately, in Crete, a large wildfire is burning uncontrollably in the Sitia region. The fire has created a front of approximately two kilometers, prompting multiple 112 emergency alerts for residents in areas including Kellaria, Adravistoi, Klisidi, Zarkos, and Azokeramos. Firefighting efforts are facing significant challenges due to difficult terrain and gusty winds. Emergency services have conducted evacuations toward Zakros, and ground forces are working through the night to contain the blaze near the settlement of Karydi.
