Climate crisis drives water scarcity in Italy and urban heat in Austria
Climate change is driving significant environmental and economic challenges across Central Europe, specifically regarding water scarcity and rising urban temperatures.
In Italy, water reserves decreased by seven percent in 2025, a trend linked to a 15 percent increase in soil sealing since 2023. Experts warn that water shortages could lead to a 20 percent loss in Italy's GDP and have already reduced agricultural productivity by 7.8 percent over the last decade. In the Alps, a reduction in annual snowfall since 2000 threatens to diminish water production by approximately 70 percent.
In Austria, urban centers are struggling with extreme heat. An evaluation of 80 municipalities with over 10,000 inhabitants found that only 16.3 percent of these cities met the recommended 45 percent green space threshold required to maintain an optimal microclimate. Experts note that inadequate urban planning from previous decades has left many cities vulnerable to heatwaves, as insufficient green space fails to provide necessary shade and evaporation for cooling.
