Turkey weather alert: Temperatures to drop and thunderstorms expected

Turkey is experiencing significant weather shifts as autumn approaches. The General Directorate of Meteorology reports that temperatures across northern, central, and western regions are expected to drop by 4 to 8 degrees Celsius starting this week.

In Istanbul, a transition to cooler, rainy weather is imminent. Forecasts indicate thunderstorms and heavy rain, particularly on Monday, September 14. AKOM has warned of potential flooding and traffic congestion, especially as the weather coincides with the start of the new school year. Temperatures in the city are expected to fall to around 25 degrees Celsius.

Other regions face varying conditions. The Black Sea coast, including Zonguldak, Bartın, and Düzce, is under alert for heavy rainfall and potential landslides. In contrast, parts of the Mediterranean and Southeast may continue to experience high temperatures, with some areas reaching 37 degrees.

Additionally, the Kastamonu Governor's Office has issued a warning regarding increased forest fire risks due to hot, dry, and windy conditions. Meanwhile, historical data shows that August 2026 was one of the warmest on record for the country, though recent trends indicate a cooling phase is beginning.
