Climate-driven flooding impacts Himalayas and Hautes-Alpes

Severe flooding and mudslides have caused significant destruction in both the Himalayas and the Hautes-Alpes region of France. In the Hautes-Alpes, violent storms on August 27 and 28, 2026, caused the Saint-Pierre torrent to overflow, destroying roads, water pipes, and sanitation infrastructure. The road to the Pré de Madame Carle in the Écrins National Park has been washed away for at least 4 kilometers, leaving nine vehicles stranded. While no fatalities were reported, 200 people were evacuated from high-risk campsites.

In the Himalayas, devastating floods have highlighted the increasing risks associated with accelerated glacier melt. Carl-Friedrich Schleussner, co-author of a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, warns that the destabilization of glaciers and the expansion of glacial lakes significantly increase the likelihood of sudden, catastrophic floods. The report emphasizes that the global 1.5°C warming threshold is likely to be exceeded in the coming years, necessitating immediate action to combat climate change.
