Climate emergencies trigger emergency responses in Chile and Venezuela

Authorities in Chile and Venezuela are responding to the impacts of recent climate emergencies and heavy rainfall in their respective regions.

In Tocopilla, Chile, the Hospital Marcos Macuada has immunized 417 people against Hepatitis A and Influenza. This preventive vaccination campaign, driven by epidemiological research, aims to protect residents in shelters and personnel involved in debris removal and cleaning following a climate emergency. Health officials emphasized the importance of preventing infections related to contact with sewage and respiratory illnesses.

In the Miranda state of Venezuela, heavy rains have caused landslides, tree falls on power lines, and river overflows. Governor Elio Serrano reported that in the Guaicaipuro municipality, 150 homes have been affected, while in Carrizal, 108 properties are compromised, including 10 total collapses. A workforce of 205 employees and 50 volunteers is currently working with heavy machinery to clear roads and inspect damaged areas.
