Climate extremes threaten agriculture in Ecuador and Peru

Agricultural sectors in Ecuador and Peru are facing significant challenges due to opposing climatic phenomena. In Ecuador, approximately 5,000 hectares of maize crops have been impacted by conflicting weather patterns: 4,000 hectares in Los Ríos are suffering from flooding, while 1,000 hectares in Napo are affected by drought. In response, the Ecuadorian government has convened the Advisory Council of the Yellow Maize Chain to analyze national production figures and supply needs.

In Peru, the El Niño phenomenon is impacting the Lambayeque region. Farmers are struggling with high temperatures and water shortages. Mango producers report that elevated temperatures have severely hindered flowering, with production estimates as low as 20% of normal levels. Experts note that while heat is currently the primary issue, future rainfall could pose additional risks such as anthracnose disease.
