Algeria and Senegal bolster climate resilience and disaster preparedness

Authorities in Algeria and Senegal are intensifying efforts to enhance climate resilience and disaster preparedness in response to increasing environmental threats.

In Algeria, the Ministry of the Interior has launched a national emergency plan to mitigate flood risks during the transition from summer to autumn. This proactive strategy includes cleaning drainage systems, maintaining sewage networks, and clearing riverbeds to prevent sudden flooding. Additionally, discussions regarding residential thermal comfort have emerged, highlighting the need for better building insulation and solar protection to manage extreme heat without total reliance on air conditioning.

In Senegal, regional initiatives are focusing on community resilience and early warning systems. In Ziguinchor, contingency plans are being developed to protect lives and property from various disasters. Similarly, in Tambacounda, stakeholders including emergency services, local officials, and agricultural producers have met to coordinate responses to extreme weather events such as floods, bushfires, and high winds, specifically to protect vulnerable sectors like banana plantations.
