IPCC Drops Extreme RCP 8.5 Scenario, Revises Global Warming Outlook

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced that the high‑emissions pathway known as Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 is now considered “implausible.” The reassessment reflects a decade of slower coal growth, expanding renewable energy, and policy shifts that make the original assumptions – a rapid rise in fossil‑fuel use – unrealistic.

The new suite of seven plausible scenarios projects a worst‑case warming of about 3.5 °C by 2100, down from the previous 4.5‑5 °C estimate, while the best‑case pathway still exceeds the 1.5 °C Paris‑Agreement target, reaching roughly 1.7 °C. A middle scenario forecasts around 3 °C of warming, aligning with current emission trends.

The change has implications for climate‑policy modeling, long‑term risk assessments, and media coverage that previously cited RCP 8.5 to illustrate catastrophic outcomes. Critics note that major outlets have not widely reported the reversal, and political figures have used the update to bolster differing agendas.
