Climate shifts in Europe drive weather instability and disease risks

Rising sea temperatures across Europe are influencing seasonal weather patterns and increasing epidemiological risks. Data from the Copernicus service indicates that European waters, particularly in the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean, have reached record temperatures. This warming trend provides energy and moisture to the atmosphere, which can fuel severe weather episodes, including heavy rainfall and storms.

Concurrently, changing climatic conditions are altering the landscape of mosquito-borne diseases. Epidemiologist Emilian Popovici warns that rising temperatures and longer summers are creating favorable conditions for mosquito populations to expand. Romania is already seeing the circulation of the West Nile virus, with 45 autochthonous cases reported by late August 2026. Furthermore, the ECDC has confirmed that the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is now established in 10 of the 42 monitored administrative units in Romania, raising the potential for local outbreaks of diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.
