Climate studies reveal diverging precipitation trends in Northeast India and the United States

Recent scientific studies highlight diverging precipitation trends in the Northeast regions of India and the United States due to climate change.

A study published in the International Journal of Climatology, conducted by the India Meteorological Department and other institutions, reveals increasing monsoon instability in Northeast India. Analyzing data from 1971 to 2022, researchers found that the region is experiencing a swing between extremes: a significant increase in intense, one-day rainfall events alongside longer dry spells. This volatility is attributed to a warming Bay of Bengal, which increases atmospheric moisture.

Conversely, research from Dartmouth College published in the Journal of Hydrometeorology indicates that the Northeast United States has experienced less frequent and less intense droughts over the last century. While warming temperatures increase evapotranspiration, the region has seen a simultaneous increase in precipitation that has mitigated drought severity. This creates a ‘tug-of-war’ between water loss from soil and plants and the influx of new rainfall.
