Climate targets adjusted in Norway and Denmark
Norway's oil and gas industry is projected to fall short of its 2030 emission reduction targets. A review by the industry association Konkraft indicates that if all planned measures are implemented, the sector will achieve a 42 percent reduction in emissions compared to 2005 levels. This is lower than the 50 percent reduction target requested by the Norwegian Parliament in 2020, and a decrease from last year's estimate of 47 percent. Offshore Norge noted that the abandonment of several large electrification projects has contributed to this downward trend.
In Denmark, the municipality of Aarhus has adjusted its climate goals. Following the failure to secure state funding for carbon capture and storage (CCS) at the Lisbjerg waste and biomass plant, the municipality has shifted its target from becoming climate neutral in 2030 to becoming climate positive by 2035. The updated plan includes lowering the 2030 CO2 target to 85-90 percent and extending the timeline for CCS implementation by five years.
