Climate volatility impacts the Iberian Peninsula and Catalonia

The Iberian Peninsula is facing severe climatic volatility, characterized by extreme contrasts between torrential rainfall and prolonged drought. In parts of Catalonia, such as the Baix Camp and Tarragonès coasts, recent heavy storms have caused destruction, while other areas face extreme aridity. Some locations, including Vinebre and Maials, have exceeded 103 days without significant rainfall.

Despite these localized extremes and an exceptionally hot summer, regional water reserves remain stable due to heavy winter and spring rains. Internal reservoirs in Catalonia are currently at over 80% capacity, and the Ebro river basin reservoirs exceed 70%.

These weather patterns reflect broader trends of climate change and a global economic model that often fails to account for environmental degradation, such as the loss of forest mass, in traditional metrics like GDP.
