Climate Week leaders face rising energy costs and AI demands

Global leaders and business executives are gathering in New York for Climate Week and the United Nations General Assembly to address the escalating costs of climate change. Discussions are being complicated by rising energy prices driven by conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, as well as the increasing energy demands of artificial intelligence and data centers.

Recent climate-driven disasters have highlighted the urgency of the crisis, including a catastrophic glacier collapse and flood on the Nepal-China border that killed more than 1,300 people. In Europe, excess heat during the summer was linked to at least 35,000 deaths. UN climate chief Simon Stiell noted that climate change is driving up food prices and wider inflation, with energy shortages costing American consumers over $100 billion in higher fuel prices.

While current national policies have shifted the projected global warming path from 3 to 3.5 degrees Celsius down to approximately 2.8 degrees, experts warn that progress is not fast enough. Despite the challenges, advocates point to a boom in renewable energy and improving clean energy economics as signs of hope.
