Climate Week New York focuses on low-carbon steel and critical minerals

During New York Climate Week, discussions focused on the transition to a low-carbon economy, emphasizing the need for concrete solutions, capital, and technology. The Global Steel Innovation Commission met to discuss the future of steel and critical minerals, aiming to accelerate industrial transformation and create value chains capable of attracting investment.

Rodrigo Lauria, Director of Climate Change and Decarbonization at Vale, noted that decarbonizing the steel industry requires collective action involving investment banks, project developers, and various social sectors. This is particularly critical for mining companies like Vale, which face significant Scope 3 emissions.

Parallel discussions highlighted the necessity for governments, companies, and multilateral institutions to move beyond diagnosis toward execution. Participants emphasized that Brazil possesses the potential to lead global transformations due to its biodiversity and productive sector, provided there is consistent public policy and long-term collaboration to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
