US and China agree to trade truce and $30 billion tariff reduction plans

Following President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, D.C., the United States and China have reached several key economic and diplomatic agreements. A central outcome is the establishment of a Board of Trade, which will oversee proposed tariff reductions on approximately $30 billion worth of goods from each nation. The U.S. list focuses on consumer goods like textiles and toys, while the Chinese list includes roughly 1,600 lines covering agricultural, seafood, and medical products.

In terms of trade commitments, China has pledged to purchase 10 million metric tons of soybeans annually and has made commitments regarding U.S. coal purchases. The two nations also agreed to a two-month extension of their current trade war truce. To facilitate future cooperation, an Investment Board was created to promote mutual dialogue.

Diplomatically, the summit addressed sensitive issues including artificial intelligence and high-performance chip production. While the U.S. maintained its existing foreign policy regarding Taiwan, President Xi urged the U.S. to oppose any potential declaration of independence by the island. The discussions also touched upon international security matters, including the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
