Climber seriously injured in Tyrol mountain accident
A 35-year-old Austrian man sustained serious foot injuries following a climbing accident in the Karwendel Mountains on September 11, 2026. The incident occurred on the ‘Supernase’ route near Vomp in Tyrol while the man was leading the first pitch of a UIAA 5+ rated climb.
During the ascent, a foothold gave way, causing the climber to fall approximately seven meters. He struck a rock ledge, resulting in severe injuries to his left foot. A fellow climber from his 17-person group provided initial first aid before the victim was abseiled down to the base of the wall.
Rescue efforts were complicated by dense fog, which initially prevented the ‘Heli 4’ emergency medical helicopter from reaching the site. Eight members of the Bergrettung Schwaz (Schwaz Mountain Rescue) performed a terrestrial transport to move the injured man toward the valley. Once weather conditions improved, the helicopter was able to complete the rescue and transport the man to a hospital in Kufstein.
