Climbers' remains found on Broad Peak and Swiss glaciers

The remains of Mallory Geis, a 39-year-old American climber, were located on the slopes of Broad Peak in Pakistan. Her discovery follows an avalanche on July 30 that killed 10 members of an international expedition, including the renowned climber Nirmal Purja. Geis, a former Pilates studio owner from San Antonio, Texas, was the last member of the group whose whereabouts were unknown. The Pakistan Alpine Club confirmed the find, and her remains will be transferred to Skardu to be returned to her family.

In a separate incident in Switzerland, the retreat of the Trift Glacier in the canton of Valais has revealed human remains that have reopened a 34-year-old missing persons case. DNA analysis conducted by the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Valais Hospital has linked the remains to two Belgian climbers, aged 39 and 41, who disappeared on September 4, 1992. The men had been traveling between mountain refuges near Weissmies peak when they were lost in bad weather; only a backpack was found during the original search efforts.
