Călin Georgescu placed under house arrest by Bucharest Tribunal

The Bucharest Tribunal has replaced the preventive arrest of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu with house arrest. Georgescu is accused of fraud and forming an organized criminal group, involving an estimated loss of 1.1 million euros.

Judge Vlad Andriescu ruled that preventive arrest was disproportionate given the nature of the charges. The judge cited the age of the alleged offenses, which date back nearly five years, the lack of violence, and the defendant's personal circumstances, including his social integration and lack of prior criminal record. The court noted that while there is reasonable suspicion regarding the crimes, the risk of flight is mitigated by the fact that the investigation has proceeded normally without him being in custody.

As part of the house arrest, Georgescu is required to report periodically regarding his means of subsistence. The decision is not final and has been contested by DIICOT.
